Microsoft has unveiled a sweeping redesign of Copilot that turns its AI assistant into a "super app" for the workplace, combining conversational chat, coding tools and autonomous AI agents in a single experience. The move, reported by The Verge on September 25, is the company's most ambitious attempt yet to make Copilot the central layer through which office work gets done.
Home, Code and Autopilot
Home becomes the main landing page, blending Copilot Chat with Cowork, the agent for delegated multi-step work. Microsoft plans to add a personalised "Today" dashboard there that pulls together key emails, meeting requests and Teams conversations. Office applications are also woven into the interface, so documents, spreadsheets and presentations can be created without switching between apps.
Code opens app-building to non-developers. Built on GitHub Copilot technology and running in a sandboxed environment, it lets users describe what they want in plain language — a tracker, a dashboard, an automation — and share the result as an internal cloud-hosted app with colleagues. For enterprises, a Copilot Managed Runtime keeps the code within the Microsoft 365 environment.
Autopilot is the renamed version of Scout, the persistent agent Microsoft introduced at this year's Build conference and rebuilt as cloud-based. It keeps working even while a user's computer is off — reviewing Teams channels, handling repetitive tasks and follow-ups — and can be called into conversations with @mentions like a colleague.
Rollout and pricing
Home and Code will reach users of Microsoft's Frontier early-access programme within weeks, with Autopilot following in private preview later in September. Usage-based pricing will apply to Cowork, Code and Autopilot, while a basic Copilot licence continues to cover chat and the core Office apps. IT administrators get an AI FinOps tool to manage costs, as longer-running agents and heavier models push bills higher.
