Over 440 Detained Across France as Student Blockades Shut Down Hundreds of High Schools

French authorities detained 440 people, most of them minors, on September 29 as a wave of student protests featuring school blockades spread across the country.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez announced the detention figures during an appearance on BFMTV, saying the arrests were made in connection with blockades and demonstrations at high schools throughout France. The protests, which began last week, have seen students picketing outside hundreds of schools.

Grievances Over Staffing and Overcrowded Classes

Students have cited a range of complaints, including difficult timetables, overcrowded classrooms, and a shortage of teachers. Overheated classrooms during this year's heatwaves have added to the frustration, with pupils demanding better conditions in their schools.

The scale of the mobilization is unusual for the start of the academic year. While France has a long tradition of student demonstrations, nationwide blockades involving hundreds of schools within days of the term beginning have put the government on the defensive over education policy.

Interior Ministry Responds

Nunez told BFMTV that 440 people had been detained across the national territory. French media reported that most of those taken in were under the age of 18, underscoring how young the protest movement is.

The detentions are likely to intensify debate over the government's handling of school resources. Education unions have also raised concerns about staffing levels and infrastructure, echoing some of the students' complaints.

Whether the blockades continue through the rest of the week remains to be seen. Authorities will be watching Wednesday's developments closely, as students test how far the government is willing to go in addressing their demands.
