Pakistani Airstrikes on Helmand Homes Kill Four, Injure Six, Afghan Official Says

Pakistani airstrikes on two houses in Garmsir district of Afghanistan's Helmand province killed four people and injured six others on Thursday, an Afghan provincial official said, describing most of the casualties as women and children.

"According to preliminary figures, four people have been killed and six others injured so far. Most of those killed and wounded are women and children," Mawlawi Sher Mohammad Wahdat, the head of information and culture of Helmand province, told Reuters.

Wahdat described the strikes as having been carried out by Pakistan's military on the two houses in the Garmsir district. The casualty figures are preliminary and have not been independently verified. There was no immediate response from Islamabad reported on this latest incident.

The strikes come amid a sharp escalation between the two neighbours. Days earlier, Pakistan said its air force had struck 10 locations inside Afghanistan that were being used to launch and store drones, some of which had been used against Pakistan. Islamabad's information minister, Attaullah Tarar, had called those "precision aerial and drone strikes" limited to military objectives. Taliban officials denied that their government had launched drones against Pakistan and condemned the earlier strikes, with spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid vowing an "appropriate response."

The two countries, allies-turned-foes, have increasingly been at odds over expanding insurgencies in their western and northwestern border regions.

The latest strikes add to a week of dangerous cross-border escalation. The United Nations reported that at least three civilians were killed in strikes on eastern Afghanistan earlier this week, while Pakistan said 28 militants were killed. The two neighbours had agreed a ceasefire in March, but international mediation has so far failed to produce a lasting resolution.
