The Pakistan Cricket Board has confirmed the schedule for the 12th edition of the Pakistan Super League, announcing on October 8 that PSL 2027 will run from March 18 to May 2. The dates set up a third consecutive scheduling clash with the Indian Premier League, which is expected to begin its 20th season in mid-March.

The PCB said the window was finalised after extensive consultation with franchises and stakeholders following a PSL Governing Council meeting in London on September 1. The league will continue with eight teams, maintaining the expanded structure introduced this year, with the final scheduled for May 2.

Scheduling clash becomes a pattern

The PSL was traditionally held in February–March from its inception in 2016 through 2024, but was pushed into the April–May window from 2025 because of ICC tournaments — the 2025 Champions Trophy hosted by Pakistan and the 2026 T20 World Cup co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. The clash with the IPL first occurred in 2025 and repeated in 2026; with both leagues now expected to occupy the March–May window, it will happen again in 2027.

The overlap has raised questions about player availability and commercial clout. Last season, a handful of overseas players pulled out of PSL contracts to sign as replacements in the IPL — including Spencer Johnson, who joined the Chennai Super Kings after leaving the Quetta Gladiators, Dasun Shanaka, who moved to the Rajasthan Royals from the Lahore Qalandars, and Blessing Muzarabani, who was subsequently handed a two-year PSL ban after leaving Islamabad United for the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Alternative window ruled out

Earlier, media rights holder Walee Technologies had raised concerns about limited broadcasting revenue in the post-Ramadan window, prompting discussion of moving PSL 12 to January–February. That option was dropped: winters in Punjab — home to three of the four traditional venues in Lahore, Multan and Rawalpindi — bring severe fog and poor visibility, and a majority of the eight franchises voted for the March–May window.

PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi said the league would "raise the bar further" after a record-setting 2026 season, in which the final at Gaddafi Stadium drew a record crowd of 32,461 as Peshawar Zalmi ended a nine-year title wait by beating debutants Hyderabad Kingsmen. With the window now locked, the PCB will roll out direct signings, retentions, the trade window and the player auction in the coming months.
