PM Modi Inaugurates Rs 19,650-Crore Navi Mumbai International Airport, Dedicates Full Metro Line-3

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated Phase 1 of the Navi Mumbai International Airport, a Rs 19,650-crore greenfield project billed as India's largest airport development, and dedicated the fully completed Mumbai Metro Line-3 to the nation during a day of high-profile infrastructure launches in Maharashtra.

Navi Mumbai International Airport opens its doors
The Prime Minister undertook a walkthrough of the newly built airport around 3 PM before inaugurating it at around 3:30 PM, the Prime Minister's Office said. Developed under a public-private partnership, the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is India's largest greenfield airport project, spread over 1,160 hectares.

It will serve as the second international airport for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and will work alongside the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport to ease congestion and place Mumbai among the world's multi-airport cities. The airport is designed to eventually handle 90 million passengers annually and 3.25 million metric tonnes of cargo.

Among its features are an automated people mover connecting passenger terminals, dedicated storage for sustainable aviation fuel, about 47 MW of solar power generation, electric bus services for city connectivity, and a water taxi link — the first for any Indian airport.

Full Aqua Line and 'Mumbai One' app
The Prime Minister also inaugurated Phase 2B of the Mumbai Metro Line-3, the stretch from Acharya Atre Chowk to Cuffe Parade built at an estimated cost of around Rs 12,200 crore. With this, the entire 33.5-km Aqua Line, with 27 stations and a total cost of over Rs 37,270 crore, stands dedicated to the nation. Mumbai's first fully underground metro line is expected to carry about 13 lakh passengers a day and link South Mumbai's heritage districts — Fort, Kala Ghoda and Marine Drive — with business hubs such as Nariman Point, the Bombay High Court, Mantralaya, the Reserve Bank of India and the Bombay Stock Exchange.

Mr Modi also launched "Mumbai One", described as India's first integrated common mobility app, covering 11 public transport operators including metro lines, the monorail, suburban railways and bus networks. The app offers integrated mobile ticketing, real-time journey updates and an SOS feature for commuter safety.

Starmer visit and a political barb
The visit comes as British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is in India on October 8-9 for his first official visit. The two leaders are scheduled to meet in Mumbai on Thursday morning, attend a CEO Forum at the Jio World Centre and deliver keynote addresses at the sixth edition of the Global Fintech Fest.

Addressing a gathering in Navi Mumbai, Mr Modi also attacked the Congress, asking the opposition party to disclose who had prevented India from mounting a military response after the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, which were linked to Pakistan.
