PM Modi to Visit Tamil Nadu on Sunday, Roll Out Rs 13,000 Crore Projects and Inaugurate Chennai Metro Stretch

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Tamil Nadu on Sunday for a day-long trip during which he will launch development projects worth over Rs 13,000 crore and inaugurate a key stretch of Chennai Metro's Phase II network.

According to an official statement, Modi will ride the Chennai Metro from Porur Bypass station to Poonamallee Bypass and back in the morning before offering prayers at the Jalakandeswarar Temple and touring the Brain Centre at IIT Madras. He will then inaugurate and lay foundation stones for projects across Tamil Nadu and address a gathering.

Metro and transport projects lead the agenda

The centrepiece of the visit is the Poonamallee-Vadapalani stretch of the Chennai Metro Rail Phase II, built at a cost of around Rs 4,900 crore. The section features a 3.7-kilometre double-decker structure and advanced signalling designed to support driverless operations. It is expected to cut travel time between Chennai's western suburbs and the city centre.

Modi will also inaugurate or lay the foundation stone for National Highway projects worth about Rs 3,700 crore. These include the 36-kilometre four-laned Vadugapatti-Therkuvenganallur section of NH-744, the 30-kilometre Madurai Ring Road section of NH-744A, and a proposed four-lane bypass at Thiruvarur on NH-83.

Railways and ports get a boost

Railway projects worth over Rs 750 crore will be dedicated to the nation, including the Karaikal-Peralam railway line, three rail flyovers in and around Coimbatore, and five redeveloped Amrit stations at Palani, Vellore Cantonment, Ambasamudram, Paramakkudi and Namakkal.

Port infrastructure will also receive attention, with projects at Chennai, V O Chidambaranar and Kamarajar ports aimed at expanding cargo-handling capacity and improving logistics. At Chennai Port, the works cover a paved storage yard, four export-import godowns, an upgraded cruise terminal and a seafarers' club.

Modi will also attend the golden jubilee celebrations of a Chennai school, the Jaigopal Garodia Hindu Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School. Security will be tight: about 22,000 police personnel will be deployed across Chennai under a five-tier security plan, and drone flights and hot-air balloons will be prohibited in designated areas.
