Mumbai: Actor Rashmika Mandanna has launched Project Annapurna, a charitable initiative under which she will cover the grocery expenses of 400 families across eight South Indian locations in three-month cycles over the next year.
Rashmika announced the initiative in a video shared on social media, revealing that she has adopted 400 families as part of the effort. She said the support is structured in four phases of three months each, so that families can save the money they would otherwise spend on everyday food items and use it to plan their futures better.
Inspired by Jayamma
The actor drew a direct connection between the initiative and Jayamma, the character she plays in the upcoming film Ranabaali. "There is something in the characters you play that influences you," she said, adding that she saw similarities between herself and Jayamma. "This has always been me, and this is also her."
Rashmika said she had long kept her charitable work private, believing it was enough that she and her team knew about it. She decided to speak about Project Annapurna publicly because she hopes it will encourage others. "If this could influence you lovelies out there to do anything like this, I would be happy," she said.
What the kits contain
According to regional reports, Project Annapurna covers Hyderabad, Mahabubnagar, Anantapur, Bengaluru, Kochi, Chennai, Kodagu and Vijayawada. Each grocery kit reportedly includes 75 kg of rice, 10 kg of whole wheat flour, 15 kg of mixed pulses and 10 litres of cooking oil, along with essentials such as ragi, spices and tea.
The announcement comes as Rashmika prepares for the release of Ranabaali, the period action drama directed by Rahul Sankrityan and co-starring Vijay Deverakonda, which arrives in theatres this week.
