The Baltimore Ravens survived a scare from the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday Night Football, winning 30-23 in overtime to improve to 4-1, after Falcons starting quarterback Michael Penix Jr left the game late in regulation with a rib injury.
The Falcons led for most of the night, but Baltimore closed the game with the final 15 points. Backup quarterback Tyler Huntley, starting in place of the injured Lamar Jackson, led a 71-yard game-tying touchdown drive in the fourth quarter and a 14-play, 68-yard touchdown drive in overtime, finishing 24 of 32 for 201 yards and two touchdowns with no turnovers. Derrick Henry carried 24 times for 102 yards and scored an 18-yard touchdown on his only reception, while safety Kyle Hamilton sealed the win with an interception of Tua Tagovailoa on Atlanta's lone overtime drive.
Penix hurt on strip sack
Penix, 26, was injured on the Falcons' final drive of regulation when Ravens edge rusher Tavius Robinson hit him hard on a strip sack. He was slow to get up, received medical attention on the field, and briefly returned before leaving again after throwing an incomplete pass.
Backup Tua Tagovailoa — making his Falcons debut after missing the season opener with a back injury — took over in overtime but threw the game-ending interception. Penix finished 19 of 32 for 240 yards and one touchdown. He sat out overtime with a towel over his head and was unable to return despite trying to warm up.
Severity unclear
Falcons coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed after the game that Penix had suffered a rib injury. "He was trying to work to get comfortable, and he could not," Stefanski said, adding that the team would perform imaging to determine the severity before setting a timeline for return.
It is unclear how long Penix will be out. The third-year quarterback, who missed the first two games of this season while recovering from his third career ACL tear, has now suffered another setback as Atlanta's season reaches a critical stretch.
