The Reserve Bank of India has announced an open market operation (OMO) sale of government securities worth Rs 25,000 crore, to be conducted on October 13, aimed at absorbing surplus liquidity from the banking system.

The announcement, made on October 12, marks another step in the central bank's ongoing liquidity management. Market dealers expect the sale to push bond yields 4-5 basis points higher when markets open on Monday, as the sale will reduce excess funds and put downward pressure on bond prices.

What OMO sales do

In an open market operation sale, the RBI sells government securities to banks and other market participants, effectively pulling money out of the banking system. This reduces surplus liquidity and can put upward pressure on bond yields. Central banks use OMO sales to keep liquidity conditions aligned with their monetary policy stance.

The move follows earlier OMO sales and other liquidity management measures by the RBI, as the central bank continues to fine-tune the amount of money circulating in the banking system. It comes as the RBI has adopted a calibrated tightening stance, having announced a 25 basis point rate revision amid concerns over inflation and borrowing costs, according to market reports.
