Twenty-year-old Renee Noronha has become the youngest Indian athlete to complete the IRONMAN World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, crossing one of endurance sport's most iconic finish lines carrying the Indian flag.
The 226-kilometre race — a 3.8 km swim, a 180 km bike ride and a 42.2 km marathon run back to back — took Noronha through choppy waters, strong winds and scorching heat on the Big Island. In an Instagram post after the race, she wrote that she had crossed the finish line "carrying the Indian flag with pride", and said she hoped the achievement would inspire more young girls across India to dream big and believe in themselves.
Born in Mumbai with family roots in Goa and now based in London, Noronha spent about a decade as an artistic gymnast before switching to endurance sport at 16, starting with running and adding swimming and cycling. She completed her first full-distance IRONMAN in New Zealand in 2024 at 18, becoming India's youngest female finisher at the time, and finished the IRONMAN European Championship in Hamburg in 2025 in roughly 14 hours. She qualified for Kona by winning her 18–24 age group at IRONMAN Philippines in 15:55:37.
Chasing a world record — and a degree
Alongside racing, Noronha is pursuing a BSc in Data Science and Applications from IIT Madras through distance learning. Her stated goal is to become the youngest athlete to complete a full-distance IRONMAN on all six continents — a record currently held by the United States' Taeyoung Lee, who finished IRONMAN Korea at 21 years and 167 days.
