Sagardighi MLA Bayron Biswas sustained burn injuries after a fire broke out at his residence in West Bengal's Murshidabad district on Saturday morning, police said. The legislator, a member of the Democratic Trinamool Congress, was rescued from the house and taken to hospital. Police said his condition was stable.
Eyewitnesses noticed smoke coming out of the second floor of the residence at around 11 am. Family members and local residents raised an alarm, after which the fire department and West Bengal Police rushed to the spot, rescued the MLA and moved him to a nearby hospital for treatment.
What caused the fire
The exact cause of the blaze is still under investigation. According to police sources quoted by The Indian Express, the legislator's family claimed the fire began in the room where Biswas was staying and then spread to other parts of the house. Investigators are examining whether the fire was triggered by a short circuit or whether it spread from the 'biri' (hand-rolled cigarette) factory that Biswas owns and which operates out of the same house.
Reactions pour in
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari reacted to the incident, telling reporters, "I will enquire. I pray for a speedy recovery." Leader of the Opposition and Democratic Trinamool Congress chief Ritabrata Banerjee posted on social media that he was "deeply disturbed and pained" by the news, calling Biswas his friend and colleague and wishing him a speedy recovery. Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said he was very worried about Biswas, describing him as "a very nice and innocent person."
Biswas first entered the Assembly after winning the Sagardighi by-election in March 2023 on a Congress ticket, defeating Trinamool candidate Debashis Banerjee by 22,980 votes. He switched to the Trinamool within a few months of that victory. In the 2026 Assembly elections, he contested on a Trinamool ticket and retained the seat, defeating the BJP candidate by more than 34,000 votes.
