Samsung Electronics has reaffirmed its plan to invest about 360 trillion won (roughly $260 billion) in the Yongin Advanced System Semiconductor National Industrial Complex, saying it is working to start operations at the first fab there in October 2029 — about a year earlier than previously planned.
The company presented its vision for the complex to local residents at the 2026 Yongin Cyber Science Festival, held October 3-4 at Yongin Mir Stadium in Gyeonggi Province, according to Seoul Economic Daily's English edition on October 4. Samsung ran four exhibition booths at the festival — double last year's count — at an event that draws about 40,000 visitors a year.
70 suppliers expected, 1.6 million jobs projected
About 70 materials, parts and equipment suppliers and fabless chip design firms are expected to move into the complex alongside Samsung, creating about 1.6 million jobs, the report said. Three exhibition themes anchored the showcase: the complex's blueprint, cogeneration energy infrastructure, and sustainable water management.
Cogeneration and recycled water
Three LNG power facilities will be built at the complex. By capturing waste heat, cogeneration raises energy efficiency to 80%, compared with 55% for a standard LNG combined-cycle plant. The power generated will also serve surrounding apartments, hospitals, schools, sports facilities and welfare centres.
Samsung also pledged to reuse hundreds of thousands of tons of treated wastewater daily: 120,000 tons from Hwaseong, 120,000 tons from Osan, and 210,000 tons from Suwon.
Construction accelerates
The timeline is moving faster than earlier communicated. Korea Land & Housing Corporation finished contractor selection for the first section of the complex two months ahead of schedule, enabling full-scale construction to begin this month, and Samsung is now working with central and local government to move the first fab's start of operations to October 2029 from the previous target of the second half of 2030.
