French energy-management giant Schneider Electric has agreed to buy Boston-based industrial software company PTC for about $22.6 billion in an all-cash deal, the largest acquisition in the company's history.
A bet on the AI boom
The deal, announced on Monday, is a direct play on the artificial-intelligence boom. Schneider said the acquisition would add engineering software used across industries including automotive, aerospace and medical technology to its portfolio, strengthening its push into AI-linked industrial systems and the data-centre infrastructure that powers them.
The transaction is expected to close after the usual regulatory approvals. Schneider did not disclose further financial terms beyond the roughly $22.6 billion all-cash price.
Industrial giants chase AI demand
The agreement is part of a wider buying spree by industrial groups expanding into businesses booming on the back of AI demand and related data-centre infrastructure. ABB forged a deal in a similar space in July, as traditional equipment makers race to sell the software and hardware that underpin the AI buildout.
Schneider, best known for its electrical products and energy-management systems, has in recent years repositioned itself as a key supplier to the data-centre industry — a segment seeing explosive growth as companies pour money into AI computing capacity.
What it means
If completed, the PTC deal would mark Schneider's most aggressive move yet to capture a larger share of AI-era industrial spending, pairing its hardware footprint with PTC's engineering software used to design products for some of the world's largest manufacturers.
