World champions Spain came from behind to defeat England 3-2 in a pulsating UEFA Nations League encounter at Wembley on Saturday, extending their unbeaten run to 39 matches. Substitute Mikel Oyarzabal scored the decisive goal in the 74th minute, calmly chipping England goalkeeper James Trafford from close range after receiving a pass from Alex Baena, to complete Spain's comeback after England had led 2-1 at half-time. A nightmare start, then a fightback. Spain made a lightning start, with Lamine Yamal scoring less than two minutes into the game. He dispossessed England defender Marc Guehi before firing a low shot past Trafford into the far corner. Ferran Torres, who scored the winning goal in the World Cup final, twice failed to capitalise after getting through on goal. England responded in style. Anthony Gordon finished a quick counterattack after combining with Jude Bellingham to equalise in the 36th minute. Four minutes later, captain Harry Kane headed home from Nico O'Reilly's cross, his effort taking a deflection off Marc Cucurella, to give the hosts a 2-1 half-time lead. The penalty that changed the game. England had a golden opportunity to go 3-1 up early in the second half. After Rodri brought down Kane inside the penalty area and VAR confirmed the foul, a penalty was awarded — but Kane slipped during his run-up and crashed his effort against the crossbar. Spain took full advantage. In the 60th minute, O'Reilly lost possession near his own goal, allowing Dani Olmo to set up Baena, who curled a low shot into the corner. Oyarzabal then struck the winner 14 minutes later. England coach Thomas Tuchel told ITV Sport: "We couldn't unfortunately convert the penalty, that may have been the decisive moment because I think then Spain would have maybe for the first time believed that their long run of unbeaten games ends here." "The third goal, I think, was the only goal that they really scored. The other ones there were too many individual big mistakes," he added. Notably, Oyarzabal had also scored the winning goal when Spain defeated England in the 2024 European Championship final.
