DMK president M K Stalin on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay over the state's law and order situation, listing a series of murders reported in the last 24 hours and demanding action.
"Take action, CM sir," the former chief minister said in a statement, taking a dig at the TVK government's handling of violent crime.
The incidents cited
Stalin listed several incidents, including the murder of 19-year-old Sathiyaseelan in Chennai's Mylapore; the killing of a father in Tiruttani who had filed a police complaint against a man accused of harassing his 17-year-old daughter; and the murder of an elderly woman, Janabai, at her home in Salem, allegedly for her jewellery.
He also referred to the hacking of Veerabhadran in Dindigul after he appeared at a police station to sign bail papers, a reported killing near Samayanallur in Madurai, and the hacking of Shyam Sundarraj near a TASMAC outlet in Sholavandan.
"North, south, west and the capital — crime incidents are rampant in every direction. Whether it is broad daylight or midnight, Tamil Nadu is drenched in blood. People are suffering in a situation where there is no safety either at home or outside," Stalin said.
Police under question
Stalin questioned whether police personnel were carrying out patrols and whether known offenders were being properly monitored. He also asked whether the state's 'Singappen' special force was giving sufficient attention to women's safety, and accused the Chief Minister — who holds the home portfolio — of focusing on protecting his own position rather than citizens' lives.
The criticism adds to a running political battle over law and order in the state, with the opposition repeatedly flagging violent incidents under the TVK government.
