Trade analyst Taran Adarsh has delivered a blunt verdict on Yash Raj Films' spy-universe film Alpha, describing the Alia Bhatt and Sharvari-starrer as "a beautiful body without a soul" and saying a weak story let the film down.
In an exclusive conversation with Bollywood Hungama published on Sunday, Adarsh said the film had the technical polish expected of a major studio production but failed to hold his attention.
'I became restless'
"It was like a beautiful body without a soul," Adarsh said of Alpha. He described it as a very well-made film in terms of its technical and visual aspects, but added: "When your story is weak, it brings me back to the same point. While watching the film, I became restless."
He said his discomfort was visible during the preview screening. "During the preview screening, I felt so restless that I kept wondering what was happening. My reaction when I walked out of the theatre was written all over my face. I did not even need to say how I felt about the film."
Contrast with Saiyaara
Adarsh contrasted his reaction with the one he had after watching Saiyaara, another film from the same production house. "The same production house had made Saiyaara, and after watching that film, I had walked out with a smile and a glow on my face that I cannot forget. But I was very disappointed with Alpha."
The comments echo his earlier remarks in July, when he said Alia Bhatt had put in tremendous effort but was not the right choice for the role, and identified the screenplay as the film's real weakness. Alpha, the first female-led film in the YRF Spy Universe, opened to a lukewarm response when it released on July 3.
