Production on The Batman Part II has been temporarily paused after writer-director Matt Reeves stepped away from the sequel for personal reasons, Warner Bros. and DC Studios confirmed on Monday.

What the studio said

The pause was announced on October 5 in a statement first reported by Deadline: "Production on The Batman Part II has been temporarily paused while Matt Reeves focuses on a family matter. Matt has the full support of DC Studios and we look forward to continuing the journey soon."

No details of the family matter have been shared, Reeves has not made a public statement, and the studio has given no restart date or estimate of how long the break will last. Filming had been underway in London since June, so the production is not starting from scratch when Reeves returns, though it is unclear how much of the film is complete or which portions of the schedule will need adjustment.

Where the film stood

Robert Pattinson returns as Bruce Wayne, alongside Andy Serkis, Colin Farrell, Jayme Lawson and Charles Dance, with Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan joining the cast in undisclosed roles.

The sequel has already endured a long and winding road to the screen. It was first set for October 2025, then moved to October 2026 and October 2027, before landing on its current date of February 18, 2028. The 2022 original grossed $770.3 million worldwide and launched the spinoff series The Penguin. Deadline's sources said it is too early to know whether this pause will affect the 2028 date, so the February date stands for now.
