The first official trailer for The Exorcist: Martyrs, filmmaker Mike Flanagan's entry in the long-running horror franchise, has debuted at Blumfest and New York Comic Con 2026, giving audiences their fullest look yet at a reboot that leans into detective-thriller territory. A new take on the franchise Written and directed by Flanagan, best known for Midnight Mass and The Haunting of Hill House, the film is the seventh instalment in the Exorcist series rather than a remake of the 1973 original. Scarlett Johansson stars as Julie Miller, a New York City homicide detective and single mother who, 13 years earlier, stopped the killing spree of a satanic serial killer known as Father Sunday, played by John Leguizamo. The trailer hints that the past is resurfacing: Chiwetel Ejiofor plays Father William, Sasha Calle appears as rookie detective Gina Restrepo, and Jacobi Jupe plays Miller's 12-year-old son Max. The footage reportedly links generations of killers, with references including H. H. Holmes and the Zodiac Killer. Release and franchise context The film is scheduled for theatrical release on March 12, 2027. It draws inspiration from The Exorcist III (1990), written and directed by original author William Peter Blatty — some viewers have spotted the name "Kinderman" on Miller's police badge in the trailer, though any connection to Blatty's film remains unconfirmed fan speculation. The reboot follows a troubled revival: Universal paid $400 million for the Exorcist rights in 2021, but The Exorcist: Believer (2023) earned $137 million worldwide against poor reviews, and its planned sequel Deceiver was scrapped in 2024 before Flanagan was brought on to steer the franchise in a new direction.
