Sidharth Malhotra and Tamannaah Bhatia's fantasy thriller The Vvaan: Force of the Forrest finished its opening weekend with Rs 33.25 crore in India net collections, powered by a strong Sunday surge, according to early estimates by Sacnilk.
The film earned Rs 14 crore from 7,135 shows on Sunday, September 27 — a 24.4 per cent jump over Saturday's Rs 11.25 crore. After an Rs 8 crore opening day, the film posted double-digit collections on both Saturday and Sunday, taking its three-day India nett total to Rs 33.25 crore. Its worldwide gross collection stands at Rs 43.15 crore.
Better than Sidharth's recent run
Despite the modest numbers, the film has outperformed Sidharth Malhotra's previous theatrical releases, including Jabariya Jodi, Marjaavaan, Thank God, Yodha and Param Sundari. The film released on September 25 alongside a crowded slate — The Paradise, Dorothy, Avengers: Endgame — Encore and Primetime — yet managed steady momentum through the weekend.
Directed by Deepak Kumar Mishra in his directorial debut, the film is inspired by the real Van Devi Temple near Patna and its folklore, mixing folk horror, mythology and action. Mishra previously directed the Amazon Prime Video web series Panchayat.
Sidharth plays Rishi Kumar, a builder from Mumbai who defies his ancestral village Devanchal's forbidden forest and awakens a divine goddess. Tamannaah Bhatia plays his wife Mamta, as Rishi stands up to forces beyond his control to protect the villagers. The ensemble cast includes Anup Soni, Shweta Tiwari, Sunil Grover, Maniesh Paul, Milind Gunaji, Avtar Gill and Panchayat's Durgesh Kumar. The film is produced by Shobha Kapoor, Ekta Kapoor, Arunabh Kumar and Niraj Kothari under Balaji Motion Pictures, TVF Motion Pictures and 11:11 Productions, with music by Tanishk Bagchi, Vishal Mishra and Amit Trivedi.
The road ahead
The film reportedly carries a budget of Rs 80-100 crore, so it will need to hold strong in the coming weeks. The upcoming Gandhi Jayanti weekend brings two big releases — Ajay Devgn's Drishyam 3 and Tom Cruise's new Hollywood film Digger — which will test the film's legs at the box office.
