South Korean golfer Tom Kim won the Asian Games men's individual golf gold on Saturday, firing a final-round 64 at Kasugai Country Club to finish three strokes clear — and with it earned an exemption from compulsory military service.

Final-day charge

The four-time US PGA Tour winner arrived jet-lagged but played superbly on the final day, two years after narrowly missing out on a medal at the Paris Olympics. South Korea grants Asian Games champions an exemption from compulsory military service, making the victory as consequential off the course as on it.

"This day was the longest day I think I've ever had in my life. It's only been six, five hours but it is definitely the longest, and I'm just glad it's done," a relieved Kim said. He also won a team silver for South Korea.

Games winding down

The golf events closed out the Aichi-Nagoya programme, with the final two gold medals of the Games set to be contested on Sunday in equestrian in Tokyo before the closing ceremony at Nagoya's Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium.
