Mumbai pacer Tushar Deshpande produced a career-best spell on Day 2 of Mumbai's Ranji Trophy Elite Group D match against Chandigarh on Monday, taking 5 for 17 — including a hat-trick, the first of the 2026-27 Ranji Trophy season.
The hat-trick is the first-ever in Ranji Trophy cricket at the Wankhede Stadium in 52 years — this is the 143rd Ranji match played at the venue, where the first was held in 1974. Deshpande is only the sixth Mumbai player to take a Ranji hat-trick, and the first against Chandigarh, a side formed in the 2019-20 season.
Three wickets in the 11th over
Deshpande completed the hat-trick in the 11th over of Chandigarh's innings, dismissing Arjun Asad (20 off 33), Shivam Bhambri (0) and Dipender Ajaib Kush (0). He also removed Raj Angad Bawa (0) and Mohd. Arslan Khan (2) to finish with 5 for 17 in 7 overs, as Chandigarh collapsed from 6 for 29 to be bowled out for 78. Mohit Avasthi took 3 for 9.
Follow-on enforced
Mumbai enforced the follow-on after posting 429 — Tanush Kotian scored 58, Deshpande contributed 44 and Avasthi made an unbeaten 56, while Rohit Danda (4/78) and Raj Bawa (4/73) were the pick of Chandigarh's bowlers. Chandigarh were 0 for 1 at stumps, still 351 runs behind.
The match was Deshpande's 50th first-class game, and he said he wanted to make it special. On missing the India A tour of New Zealand, he added: "I want to chase performance, not selection."
