Production has wrapped on Twilight of the Dead, the long-gestating zombie film conceived by George A. Romero as the closing chapter of the saga he began with Night of the Living Dead in 1968. Filming took place in Kentucky and concluded in September, according to reports from Deadline, ending years of development limbo for one of horror's most anticipated projects.
A new cast takes the lead
Kate Beckinsale, best known for the Underworld franchise, leads the cast alongside Betty Gabriel of Get Out and Upgrade. The ensemble also includes Abigail London, John D. Hickman, Cooper Barnes, Kurt Deimer, Phil Burke and Tait Fletcher. When the project was first announced in 2021, Milla Jovovich was attached to star and Brad Anderson was set to direct; neither is part of the finished production.
Behind the camera
Directing duties fell to Doron Paz and Yoav Paz, the filmmaking brothers behind Jeruzalem and The Golem. Ho Sung Pak oversaw the stunt and action sequences, while special effects veteran Greg Nicotero handled the makeup effects, a significant link to Romero's legacy: Nicotero began his effects career working on Romero's Day of the Dead and later became closely associated with modern zombie effects through The Walking Dead. The screenplay was developed by Paolo Zelati, Joe Knetter and Robert L. Lucas from a treatment Romero worked out with Zelati before his death in 2017. Romero's widow Suzanne Romero is attached to the production, which is produced by Roundtable Entertainment.
What the film is about
The story is set on a devastated Earth where humanity's remaining survivors are caught between warring factions and an evolving undead threat. Magenta Light Studios holds the North American rights and plans a theatrical release in the United States and Canada, while The Syndicate is handling international sales. For fans, a finished shoot on Romero's final chapter is itself the headline after years in which the project repeatedly changed form.
