At 38, Umesh Yadav has shown he still has plenty left in the tank. The veteran fast bowler claimed a five-wicket haul on his debut for Punjab in the Ranji Trophy, marking his first-class comeback in style.

Yadav finished with 5 for 70 against Assam, spearheading Punjab's bowling attack in his first Ranji Trophy appearance since December 2024 and his first first-class match in nearly two years.

A new chapter

The Vidarbha stalwart has joined Punjab as a guest player for the 2026-27 domestic season, giving the side a proven international campaigner to lead its pace attack. His performance is an encouraging start to that new assignment.

Yadav last represented India in the World Test Championship final in June 2023, and his domestic form this season will be watched closely as he attempts to write another chapter in a long first-class career.
