Uruguay handed India their joint-biggest home defeat in history on Tuesday, running out 6-1 winners in an international friendly at Kolkata's Salt Lake Stadium — the first meeting between the two sides in 44 years.

Darwin Nunez put the visitors ahead from the penalty spot in the 11th minute, but India hit back through Anirudh Thapa's equaliser later in the first half, briefly raising the home crowd's hopes. Play was then held up for more than half an hour because of thunder and lightning, with around 37,000 spectators in attendance at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan.

Uruguay take control after the restart

Whatever momentum India had built evaporated once play resumed. Maximiliano Araujo struck twice, on either side of the hour, with Rodrigo Zalazar adding another between his goals, before late strikes from Juan Manuel Sanabria and Rodrigo Aguirre completed the rout.

A historic low for the Blue Tigers

The margin made it only the third time India have lost a home match by five goals — the last such defeat came against Zambia in 2011 — and just the second time the national side have conceded six goals on home soil, the first being against Yemen in 2010.

The result closed a sobering international window for India, who had earlier drawn 1-1 with Panama and lost 4-0 to Brazil in Kolkata. The team now heads to New Zealand for friendlies in Auckland and Christchurch on November 12 and 15.
